Maverick Craft Beer December 2013 Hop Report: At Maverick Craft Beer we take pride in keeping many if not all processes of our company “DIY” and “in house”…last year we dabbled in growing hops in our brewers garden with great success. Year 2 for our Hop Garden….dramatic growth in the second year…feeding regularly with organic compost. Hoping we don’t run out of room this year!? We have also added a first year “Cascade” rhizome into the mix to take our total varieties to 3…Hallertau. A multi-skilled hop that consistently delivers across all areas from kettle to glass. A true dual-purpose variety with an enviable alpha: beta ratio, the New Zealand Hallertau measures up on flavour scores as well as flavour stability trials. Its rounded flavour, moderate cohumulone and outstanding oil profile create a truly rewarding finish. Hallertau Aroma has recently been renamed to NZ Wakatu.
Cascade is a versatile hop variety that is popular for bittering, finishing and dry hopping of pale ale and American style beers. It is characterised by a floral, citrus profile, with a hint of spice. We use Cascade in our “Darkside” Black IPA with impunity.
Sticklebract. New Zealand Sticklebract is a general purpose bittering hop with a unique flavour characterised by a piney aroma and a hint of citrus.
We will keep you posted but be sure to look our for our fresh hop harvest ales in the Autumn at Kai Whakapai Cafe.
